Digital Camera Megapixel Myth – How Much Is Enough?

With digital cameras, there’s one feature that manufacturers and consumers value the most and that is the megapixel resolution. Digital camera manufacturers try to outdo their competition with each new model by giving their cameras higher and higher megapixel resolution. Most people believe that the best cameras are the ones with highest megapixel resolution. The digital camera manufacturers then give high megapixel digital cameras exorbitant price tags because people put a high premium on the number of megapixels.

What most people don’t know is that there is such a thing as the “megapixel myth”. The megapixel myth is the belief that the higher the megapixel resolution, the better the image quality. But the truth is that the megapixel resolution a photographer needs depends on what he plans to do with the pictures. For the average user, you really don’t need a high megapixel resolution for your digital camera. And too many megapixels can be a bad thing.

Ideal Megapixel Resolution For Digital Cameras

How many megapixels do you really need for a digital camera? It really depends on what you plan to do with your pictures. The more you manipulate the photos, the higher megapixel resolution you’ll need.

Most of us use our digital camera to take pictures to post on our website or on our social networking site or to email it to our friends. So we only really need a digital camera which has 6 megapixels or less. Why? Mainly because when these pictures are posted on the internet, they will appear smaller-than-actual-pixel size. This means the resolution won’t matter that much because the pictures are too small.

You’ll be able to get great pictures even with a digital camera that’s less than 6 megapixels. Too many megapixels would result in slower shooting and the image files would be too big. And when image files are too big, they’re difficult to upload and would likely cause errors or would be slow to appear on a webpage.

So when do you need more than 6 megapixels on a digital camera? When you do a lot of photo editing and you want to blow up your picture, that’s when you’ll need 7 megapixels or more. It’s those extra megapixels that allow you to manipulate the smallest details of a photo when editing.
